Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia, Inc. is no longer offering Mediation Services. If you have questions regarding mediation or a prior case, please contact the mediation coordinator at your local court.
Mediation is a process in which parties work toward a settlement outside of a court room. A mediator is a neutral third party who facilitates communication between the parties of the dispute. Mediation provides people the opportunity to express their thoughts and the issues that are important to them. The parties work together under the guidance of our Virginia Supreme Court certified mediators to resolve the dispute. In creating their own agreement, the parties will not need to appear in court. Both parties are “winners.”
Our certified mediators are trained and experienced in dealing with a wide variety of issues:
- Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court
- Custody, Visitation, Child/Spousal Support
- Restorative Justice Conferencing
- Child Dependency
- Parent-Teen Contracts - General District Court
- Contract
- Landlord/Tenant
- Employment
- Debt/Credit - Circuit Court Family
- Equitable Distribution
- Elder care - Private Cases
- Any issue in dispute
Mediation has been proven to be highly successful. Often, strong emotions prevent individuals from communicating, or seeing that they actually agree more than they disagree. When the real issues are identified, it is much easier to resolve them. It is a faster process than going to court, and is less expensive than litigation. Parties to a mediated agreement also enjoy greater input and control over the outcome than courts will generally provide.
