Financial Assistance

financialasistFinancial assistance may be available to individuals and families in financial need. We receive more applications than funding and completing an application DOES NOT guarantee financial assistance. All requests for financial assistance are by appointment only. Calls are taken beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays of each week. Prospective clients must call (757) 533-9569 to schedule an appointment. Calls are accepted until all available appointments are filled. Once all available appointments are filled, the appointment line is closed until the following week. Walk-In requests for financial assistance are not accepted. Additional documentation (such as proof of income, proof of identity, and a copy of the bill) may be required to submit your application for financial assistance.

Sources of funding are limited. Requirements for eligibility include:

  • Renter or Homeowner must physically occupy the property as his/her principle residence.
  • Bill must be in Occupant’s name at time of request.
  • The Bill should not be delinquent more than 30 days at the time of application.
  • Program can not serve clients who were served within an 18 month period.
  • Individual or Family must be in a crisis beyond their control.
  • Applicants must show the ability to maintain self-sufficiency after assistance is awarded.

Budget Counseling

budgetcounselHandling money wisely is one of life’s greatest challenges. Budget Counseling takes an in-depth look at income and expenses for those who want to take control of their finances. Counselors will help individuals and families set a budget based on income, living expenses, priorities and goals. Future financial problems can be avoided through planning, wise use of credit, education and family money management. All sessions are free and confidential.

Debt Management Program

Our Debt Management Program works with you to take control of your finances, get you out of debt and improve your credit rating. We assist individuals and families of all income levels and all levels of debt.

Did you know that…

  • The average American household is carrying a credit card balance of $7,500 to $8,000.
  • There is no limit on the amount a credit card company can charge you for being even an hour late with your payment.

Our Debt Management Program requires that clients have the available funds for repayment to their creditors.

All counseling services are free and confidential, but there is a one-time set-up and monthly maintenance fee if you enroll into the Debt Management Program. Eligible debts include unsecured credit cards and personal loans. Mortgages, car loans, student loans, and IRS debts are not eligible.

Counseling on Reverse Mortgages

If you are a senior in the fairly common position of being “house rich and cash poor,” you may want to explore the advantages of a reverse mortgage. We offer Counseling on Reverse Mortgages to help evaluate your options, helping you to see whether a reverse mortgage would be right for you. We will also provide you a list of participating lenders.

Eligibility criteria

Available to anyone who has need of them. Reverse mortgage borrowers must be at least 62 years of age.

There is no upfront fee for the counseling session, but a counseling fee of $125.00 is paid from loan closing. Please call 484-0703 to schedule an appointment.

Despite what you might think, the key to financial health is generally not more money, it’s better knowledge about handling money. The good news is that most financial problems can be avoided. Our Educational Classes on Financial Matters address personal money management and the wise use of credit, with topics such as “Plan your spending—Reach your Goals” and “Beware of Predatory Lending.”

Catholic Charities also offers a series of classes addressing the specific needs of seniors. Our Silver Lining Series focuses on issues such as Identity Theft and Scams targeting seniors, as well as long term care planning. Catholic Charities is proud to partner with the City of Virginia Beach and its Bank On Program. Buying a home can be confusing and complicated. Homebuyer Counseling and classes help consumers make smart decisions. Since buying a home involves the largest purchase most of us will make in life, it’s important to know the details about the type of mortgage and payments that will best meet your budget. This program takes you step-by-step through the process, with essential information about mortgages, legalities and protections for the homebuyer.
